Someone just asked and I thought a little guide could be useful and wouldn't take too long.
A T1 ship is your basic bog standard ship. They come with different roles but are the basic ships of New Eden. They're also the cheapest ships! Their tank tends to be the weakest and they tend to be not so hot at the roles they perform, but they're always a ship that you can die with a smile on your face with rather than stressing about the cost when compared to other ships.
T2 ships are ships that are much better at their role than their T1 counterparts. If you fly a Caracal, it's a good, cheap, fun ship. If you fly a Cerberus, you will have more range, more damage and more tank. But it comes at a price tag, a Caracal is about 10-12 million, a Cerberus will set you back over 190 million. Not all T2 ships have a T1 counterpart, specifically interdictors and heavy interdictors have no T1 equivalent.
Navy ships are usually heavily tanked variants but often otherwise similar. It does vary from ship to ship. For example, if you move from an Apocalypse to an Apocalypse Navy Issue, you will get a better tank, more versatile drone options, better locking speed and other bonuses, but the basic ship bonuses are identical. However if you compare an Armageddon and Armageddon Navy Issue, the tank is still a lot stronger but the bonuses are completely different and it changes from a drone ship to a laser boat. These aren't usually as expensive as a T2 ship, but can run up quite a bill compared to the T1 versions, often double or more.
Pirate ships vary a lot from ship to ship, they can be either general DPS ships or have a specific role like the neuting and webbing on a Bhaalgorn. They usually have a good tank but it does vary a lot. These tend to be the most expensive of the ships. The blueprints they're made from are rare and the ships are very good. These are end-game PvE subcaps (along with the Marauder T2s) and sometimes even used for PvP, though that's pretty rare due to their cost.
Always check the bonuses of the ship you're flying and make sure that it does what you want it to do!
